NBA Player Profile: Kevin Martin

Kevin Martin is one of the most prolific scorers in the NBA. He is a volume shooter who has not shown the ability to help his team in the win column. However he is now on a team (Rockets) who he may fit in perfectly with. Time will tell if he can eliminate the label of being a one dimensional player.

Strengths: Martin is a very good free throw shooter and an above average three point shooter. He averages a little over one steal per game during his career. He has good size (6′7″) for a shooting guard.

Weaknesses: For a guy his size he is a terrible rebounder (under 4.5 per game). He also isn’t much of a passer with a career 1.9 assist per game average. His field goal percentage has decreased every season since his second year.

Our Opinions

James: Kevin Martin has a little work to prove to me that he is nothing more than a volume shooter. He doesn’t impress me. There are plenty of players who could average 20 points  if they took sixteen shots a game, he just happened to be in a situation where he was allowed to do it. He may however be a perfect match for Houston. They have problems finding shots in their offense, Martin doesn’t have that same problem.

George: Hey Kevin Martin, can you pass me the ball. Didn’t think so. All Star guards have to be able to do more than just jack up shots in the NBA. If it wasn’t for his good free throw shooting then I would have to call him a bum. Screw it, I’m going to call him one anyway.

NBA Player Profile: Brandon Roy

Brandon Roy is one of the fiercest competitors in the NBA today. His leadership is one reason that basketball in Portland has such a bright future. He comes close to averaging over 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. He isn’t the best player in Portland history, but he could possibly end up that way when his career is over.

Strengths: Efficient scorer averaging 22 points on 16 shots per game. Rebounds decent for a shooting guard and has good passing skills. Gets to the free throw line a lot. Leadership ability is one of the best in the NBA.

Weaknesses: Not a great three point shooter. Below average free throw shooter for a guard (78% this season). Hasn’t yet shown the ability to take his team to the next level.

Our Opinions:

James: Brandon Roy is a joy to watch on the basketball court. He plays to win and doesn’t care what his stats end up at as long as they get the victory. I think that he may replace Clyde Drexler in a lot of peoples mind as the fan favorite in Portland.

George: Brandon Roy is a decent player who hasn’t really accomplished anything in the NBA. The other “elite” players have shown that they can take their teams deep into the playoffs no matter how bad the team is around them. As far as I’m concerned, the jury is still out on Roy.

NBA Player Profile: Yi Jianlian

Yi Jianlian was the sixth player chosen in the 2007 NBA draft. He is currently considered a bust, but he has shown promise this season. At 22 years old he still has time to prove that the Milwaukee Bucks were wise in drafting him and that the New Jersey Nets were wise in trading for him.

Strengths: He has good shooting touch for a seven-footer and is very athletic. His free throw percentage is around 80 percent which is also very good for a guy his size. He has had stretches where he looks like a future star. He is still young and has time to develop.

Weaknesses: He has been very inconsistent so far in his career and has shown an inability to stay healthy. His rebounding is sub-par for a seven foot power forward, but then again he plays a lot on the perimeter. His shot selection is very questionable, which shows in his career field goal percentage (just over 40%).

Our Opinions

James: I’m really pulling for this guy. He has so much global appeal and means a lot to the growth of the NBA in China. I think that if he ever gets healthy that he could average twenty points a game and get close to double digit rebounding every night. I think he can become a poor man’s                     Dirk Nowitzki, though he does need to improve his post play.

George: Bust, bust, bust, bust, bust. How can you say it any other way. He is a streaky shooter who couldn’t tell a good shot from a bad one if they were labeled. James’ fascination for foreign players is the only reason Yi is even one of his favorite NBA players. He may be able to become a 15 point scorer in the league, but he was the sixth pick, he should be able to do better.

NBA Player Profile: Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry, the son of NBA sharpshooter Dell Curry, is a Rookie Of The Year Candidate for the 2009-10 NBA season. He was an All-American at Davidson and set the NCAA record for three-pointers in a season. His personality will make him very marketable in the future if he gets himself to star status.

Strengths: Curry is an excellent three point shooter. His rookie three-point percentage of .434 shows that he has adjusted to the NBA three line. He rebounds fairly well for a guard and has very quick hands leading to his almost 2 steals per game. He is very good fundamentally on defense, making up for his lack of size.

Weaknesses: His assists are a little low for an NBA point guard, but he should improve on those numbers as he gets more experience. He hasn’t been able to translate his numbers into wins for his team yet.

Our Opinions

James: He is a future superstar. His work ethic, natural ability and infectious smile will make him a media darling. He will be a borderline Hall Of Fame candidate and if he can show that he can lead a team deep into the playoffs he should make it. I see him becoming a 25 point, 8 assists and 2.5 steal per game guy for a long time and maybe end up as one of the top three long range shooters in NBA history.

George: He’s on a bad team that puts up a lot of shots. The opposing players don’t need to play hard defense on him because they are not usually in danger of losing to the Warriors. He will be a solid player in the NBA, but time will tell if he will perform once (and if) teams start to focus on him. Just like Brandon Jennings flopped once teams started guarding him with intensity, I think Stephen Curry will struggle when that happens.
