NBA Player Profile: Andrea Bargnani

Andrea Bargnani was the first player selected in the 2006 NBA Draft. Although he hasn’t quite lived up to a “number one pick” level, he is a very solid player. Bargnani was born in Rome, Italy and played in Europe for a few seasons before being drafted.

Strengths: Of seven-footers, he has probably the second best outside shot in the NBA (Dirk Nowitzki being better). He hit right around 40% of his threes the last two seasons and is an 80% free throw shooter. His block shots (1.4 this season) are pretty good for a guy that spends a lot of time on the perimeter.

Weaknesses: One thing that truly separates Bargnani from Nowitzki is his rebounding. Where Dirk averages close to double figures, Bargnani is having his best season with 6.5 boards per game. That doesn’t quite cut it for a guy his size in the NBA. He has also never averaged more than 1.2 assists in a season.

Our Opinions

James: Finally Andrea Bargnani is showing that his potential translates to the NBA. He is a very good three point shooter and his recent scoring surge has come at a time that the Raptors are on a good streak. He is solid, but for a number one pick he still has a way to go before his team can say he was worth it.

George: It’ like when a child is bad it’s whole life and then avoids landing in jail for a whole year, you celebrate that. The only reason people are acknowledging Bargnani this year is because he was such a disappointment his first few seasons and he’s just not as much of a disappointment now. That in no ways means that he has made it, for a number one pick he needs to do more than just launch threes. Dirk should take offense to people comparing the two of them.
