NBA Daily: 1-9-10
It was a good night to be a young team last night. Both the Kings and the Thunder were able to pull off big wins. The NBA had eight games on the schedule and it was not easy for the committee to make it’s choice of top players.
NBA Stars of the Night
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City. We all know that I am very cautious to enter Durant into the “elite” NBA player talk, but I cannot deny the significance of last nights game. The 40 points he scored were not a surprise. It was the efficiency with which he did it. Only 18 shots from the field, that is impressive.
He also had 12 rebounds and 3 assists. If he is to ever be in the same category as Lebron James and Kobe Bryant, those stats need to improve also. He is only 21 years old. There is still time to improve on his 7 rebounds and 3 assists per game. If his overall game evolves, he could be very special.
Tyreke Evans, Sacramento. Evans scored 27 points on only 15 field goal attempts. The rookie guard has barely skipped a beat after missing a few games with an injury. Since getting back on the court he is averaging 23.3 points, 5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game.
Derron Williams, Utah. Williams had 20 points, 9 assists and 2 steals in the Jazz’s win over Dallas. He had missed two games leading up to this win and didn’t miss a beat.
Utah is probably the most disappointing team in the NBA this season and as the leader of the team, Williams has to take some of the blame. For Utah to get back into the playoff hunt he will have to be even more dominate, he will have to become a top five NBA player, other wise the Jazz will not be playoff bound.
NBA Dud of the Night
Whole Team, Pistons. They have lost 12 straight games and someone(s) have to be held responsible for that fact. Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton are both part of the Pistons Championship team, but they are hardly playing like it.
Prince, a former Olympic team member, is averaging less than 10 points per game this season. Hamilton is shooting less than 40% from the field. It is starting to look like Chauncey Billups was the only reason these guys had successful careers. If Detroit wants to turn the season around, they need to prove to me that they can play without him.
International Player of the Night
Luis Scola, Argentina . Scola had 23 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Rockets past the Knicks. The Rockets forward is a monster in international play and has so far been a very solid NBA player. Some players would attempt to take advantage of Yao Ming’s injuries this year to pad his stats, but Scola is content on doing whatever it takes to win.
