Chris Kaman Out Plays Jermaine O’Neal
Chris Kaman is really putting some notches in his “I outplayed your teams center” bedpost. So let’s add another player who used to be good to that list. I remember a time when Jermaine O’Neal was an “it” center in the NBA. Four straight seasons averaging 20 points per game (topping out at 24.3) and always keeping himself within shouting distance of double figure rebounds.
However this is the third season in a row where O’Neal has been a shadow of his former self. Of course injuries are the true culprit, he is too young at 31 years old to be slowing due to age (keep your head up Jermaine, just look at Grant Hill, theres still time.)
That is the sad state of the center position in the NBA, that the guys that were All-Stars at the position just a few years ago seemed to be washed up. Luckily the league has guys like Chris Kaman and Marc Gasol to carry the torch for the position. In the Clippers game against the Heat, Kaman scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. That compared to O’Neal’s 2 points and 2 rebounds in twenty minutes. That shows you the difference in ability between the two at this stage of their careers.
Of course this isn’t surprising, Kaman is making twenty point, 10+rebound games a regular occurrence. His team the Los Angeles Clippers are making winning a pretty common thing too. They are within a game of being at .500, and all that without number one pick Blake Griffin.
Baron Davis and Kaman are most definitely the heart and soul behind their team clawing it’s way back into the playoff picture. Along with defensive stud Marcus Camby, consistent contributer Rasaul Butler, and up and coming guard Eric Gordon; they have one of the best starting line-ups in the NBA.
