NBA Player Profile: Michael Beasley
Michael Beasley, the second pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, is finally starting to show signs of star potential. The 6-foot-10 player out of Kansas State was widely considered a no-brainer high draft pick, but was somewhat of a disappointment in his rookie season. In the 2009 off-season, Beasley went into rehab for supposed problems with marijuana.
Strengths: He has a solid inside touch and mid-range jumper. He may be able to extend his range to the three point line later in his career. For his age, he is an okay rebounder for a power forward. If two years from now he is averaging less than seven boards a game, it will become a weakness for him. He is a good, solid free throw shooter.
Weaknesses: Considering he is only making 20 percent of his threes, he should not have taken close to fifty of them so far this year. He doesn’t pass, steal, or block shots particularly well. As said above he does need to improve his rebounding if he wants to become a star.
Our Opinions
James: I just don’t know yet. I’m sure the Bulls are happy that they picked Derrick Rose over him in the draft right now. However Beasley’s upside could one day have him as the better player of the two. He is only 20 years old right now, but at the same age, Durant and Lebron were light years beyond him. Truly I think he will make a couple of All-Star games, but he will hardly be worthy of a number two pick.
George: I can finally agree with James on something. He is going to be a bust for a number two pick. His immaturity will not go away. Very few players in any sport, who aren’t at least somewhat grown up when they go pro, turn it around. The NFL’s Chris Carter is an example of someone turning it around, but I see Beasley being more of a Ricky Williams, flaking out and messing up his promising career.
