Ricky Rubio update 12-18-09

Just a quick update on the progress of Ricky Rubio  this season in Europe. Regal Barcelona is using him sparingly, which is very normal for a young player in Europe. They do not concentrate on individual stats like we do in the U.S. and so therefore stats really don’t gauge their performance very well.

However Rubio is playing a solid 20 minutes a game and is fifth in the league in assists at 4.9 per game. His steals per game are also solid at 1.1. He is a very crafty defender and has extremely quick hands, which is why I don’t think he will be a huge liability in the NBA. (Notice what Stephen Curry is doing so far at almost 2 steals per game)

So what does his performance mean in terms of his future NBA career. Absolutely nothing. Remember that Brandon Jennings had very little impact in Europe last year and he is a leading Rookie of Year candidate this season. There has also been a slew of can’t miss guys from Europe that have been busts (think Darko).
